How do I install the New Scientist app?

I have a subscription that includes app access. How do I log in to the app?

To log in, tap the Account icon in your app and the ‘Sign in’. Enter the email address associated with your New Scientist subscription and password to access your subscription.

If you have purchased a subscription through the App Store, you do not need to log in.

I am logged in but the app is not recognising my subscription.

Please ensure you have activated your email here and then generate a password by following the link in the email that you will receive. These can then be used to log into the app.

I have forgotten my password. How do I reset it?

If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it here.

I subscribe to the print edition. Can I use this app for free?

If you have a print only subscription, you will be unable to access this app for free. You can upgrade your subscription to include app access by contacting our subscriptions team by phone or email.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In the event you wish to cancel your subscription, you may do so by contacting our subscriptions team by phone or email.

Alternatively, you can log in to Manage My Account, click ‘Need Help’ and then ‘Cancellation Request’.

How do I download issues?

If you are a subscriber with app access, make sure you are logged in to the app first. Then, to download an issue, click on the ‘Magazine’ tab on the bottom ribbon of your screen. Then, hold down on the cove4r picture of the issue you’d like to download and follow the prompts.

If you are not a subscriber, you can buy single issues by holding down on the cover and following the prompts.

Can I read New Scientist when I am not connected to the internet?

In the first instance, you will need a connection to download new issues onto your app. Once you have downloaded an issue it will then be available for you to read or listen to offline.

Why can’t I download the latest issue?

It may be that your device is not connected to the internet. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and that your device is not in airplane mode before downloading. Alternatively, it may be that your subscription has ended, in which case you will need to purchase the issue as an individual copy or re-subscribe to New Scientist.

Can I keep copies of New Scientist on my tablet or mobile?

Yes. When using our new app, downloaded issues of New Scientist will be stored on your device, which you can access even if your subscription has ended. Any downloaded issues are tied to the device and cannot be transferred to another device.

How do I delete issues from my device?

If you wish to remove issues from your device, hold down on the cover of the issue you want to delete and follow the prompts.

How do I find the articles I want to read?

When you open an issue from the issue library, you will see a table of contents, Tap on a section heading (e.g. News, Features, Views) to browse the articles in that section or tap on a headline to go straight to the article.

How do search for a particular topic or article?

To locate the search function, go to your account within the app. Under tools, you’ll see ‘Search’, click on this and type the word or phrase you’re searching for.

Can I change the text size and brightness of the articles?

Yes. Within ‘Settings’ you’ll find a tools section where you can change font size and enable night mode.

Can I save articles to read later?

Yes. You can bookmark articles to read later via the bookmark icon. Once downloaded, you can go to ‘More’ to access all of your bookmarked articles in one place.

Can I share articles with my friends?

Yes. You can share articles via the share icon. Please note that those you share articles with must be subscribers to read them in full.

How can I access the audio feature?

Open an article displaying the audio icon and click ‘Listen to this article’. This will add the article to your queue.

To listen to the whole issue, under ‘Magazine’ select ‘Listen to this issue’ and this will add the issue to your queue.

How can I display the audio queue?

Click on the title of the article in the audio ribbon. You can then manage the audio queue including deleting and reordering items.

How do you download articles to listen to offline?

Curate a playlist using the queue and then click the download icon.

How can I close the audio feature?

When you are finished listening, slide left on the audio ribbon at the bottom and click on the X.

I have subscribed through the App Store. How do I get a refund?

If you subscribed to the New Scientist app via the App Store, you need to contact Apple directly to request a refund. Please note New Scientist does not receive or have access to queries submitted directly to Apple.
